It’s that time of year again - the long and cold winter drag.  If where you are from is anything like Montreal, you’re psychologically prepared for at least 3 to 4 months of harsh, snowy and cold winter months. However, even though the winter blues may kick in, the cliché “when you look good, you feel good” becomes even more important. Sure, the full down jacket is great for skiing or any outdoor activities, but as far as feeling stylish and looking good, nothing compares to the timeless overcoat or topcoat. A well-fitted overcoat will not only make you look like a star but may also help deal with those winter blues.

There are a lot of terms used when people are describing dressier jackets. For simplicity, the overcoat and topcoat are the most popular names used. An overcoat is a long winter coat used to cover up your clothing, usually in the form of a suit. The length of an overcoat extends below the knees. On the other hand, a topcoat has the same functionality but the length usually ends before the knees. When buying a coat, especially online, knowing the distinction between the two will guarantee that you order exactly what you’re looking for.

Overcoat

Being that the overcoat usually passes the knees, such a style is usually the preference for the seasoned generation and could compliment those with a rounder figure. As well, due to its length, usually the overcoat is also the warmer option.

On the other hand, the younger generation of professionals have now adopted a shorter version of the overcoat that has been popularized and named topcoat.  These are much shorter and usually fall at or above the knees. The topcoat compliments those who are built trimmer and convenient if you are going to come in and out of a car often in a day.

Camel Top Coat

The choice between an overcoat and a topcoat is really a matter of choice. The overcoat is a timeless style whereas the topcoat is the newer and hipper version of the overcoat. Whichever you decide to purchase, the overcoat and topcoat will leave an impression and help you wipe those winter blues. One thing is for sure, when purchasing one, make sure to wear a sports jacket or suit underneath it as the coat is supposed to fit above these garments. If you see wrinkles when buttoning the coat, it would be a tell-tale sign that it is too tight.
